About the event
Single in your 50s, 60s & 70s plus & ready for an adventure?
Compete against fellow treasure hunters—or the clock—as you race to capture photos of your team in front of as many iconic artifacts as possible within a set time limit. Explore treasures from ancient Greece (like the Parthenon’s ‘Elgin Marbles’), Egypt (Rosetta Stone), Medieval Europe (Lewis Chessmen), Mesopotamia, Mexico, China, and more!
But this is more than just a treasure hunt. Embedded in your hunt text are bonus challenges, ranging from the fun and silly to the deeply illuminating. These tasks ensure that you not only spot your treasures but also learn something fascinating along the way. It’s educational, interactive, and most importantly, a lot of fun!
Sample Clue: Lion Hunt Friezes
Location: Palace of Ashurbanipal, North Palace of Nineveh (Northern Iraq), Assyrian (Mesopotamian), 645 BC
In 12th-century Europe, lions began to symbolise royalty, possibly influenced by the Crusades to the Middle East. One chief source of this symbolism is the Assyrian Lion Hunt frieze, depicting King Ashurbanipal’s triumph over nature in his grandfather’s Palace at Nineveh. The frieze shows lions—vicious, attacking, and ultimately defeated—lining the walls.
Take a closer look at the "fence" of the hunting field: shielded soldiers standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Earn 20 points by snapping a photo of your team lined up in profile like the soldiers, pointing to one of their rows (you’ll find two human shields in this room). Men, it seems, were as disposable as lions to the Assyrians!
Did you know the Mesopotamian lion was compared in size to a large St Bernard dog? Extinct by the 19th century, these lions were once released by a small boy (visible above in his protective cage) to face their grim fate. Spot this brave boy and score another 20 points with a photo.
For the ultimate challenge, search the gypsum alabaster reliefs and list four of the eight types of animals depicted in this room (excluding lions and humans). No partial credit, but the British Museum tags are there to help! Game Points: 50
But this is just a peek at what happens on the day of this fun afternoon! Don’t worry about being culturally aware—the game is designed for everyone, from beginners to seasoned history buffs, ensuring that everyone can enjoy and engage with the treasures of the British Museum.
